All You Need To Know About Hair Extensions

So you’re thinking about getting hair extensions? You have come to the right place. What was popular a few years ago isn’t popular today. Methods have changed and so has the technology. Here I will start with the basics.

Types of Hair Extensions

I will only name the few that are the most popular. Tape-ins, NBR/Hand-Tied, Tipped, Fusion, and Micro Bonding.

Tape-ins

Are by far the most popular because they are lightweight and easy to hide. You can put your hair up and leave it down. They come in many different lengths and colors. They also have a fast time for putting them in. You are looking at about 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your goal outcome.

Hand-Tied & NBR

Are the newest popular hair extension technique and I think they will surpass the tap-ins in the next year. They are a mixture of beads and sew in hair extensions. They are the most natural looking hair extension and can be used to go from short hair to long in a matter of hours.

Tipped aka Beaded

Are still semi-popular depending on your hair texture. They take the longest for application time and touch-ups. Running from 3-6 hours depending on how your goal outcome for the hair extensions for your first time. Touch ups are not as long, taking an average of a couple of hours.

Fusion & Micro Bonding

Are semi-popular depending on your hair texture. They take the longest for application time and touch-ups. Running from 3-6 hours depending on how your goal outcome for the hair extensions for your first time. They are also the most expensive due to the time it takes to remove and reapply. Fusions also last the longest at 2-4 months for retightening.

What type of Hair Extensions is right for your hair?

Most of this should be done at your consultation with your hair stylist. But if you have:

  • Baby fine, fine or fragile hair: Hand-Tied, Tape-ins, Fusion/Micro Bonding will be the best for you as they are light weight and there are tape-ins that look like the hair is coming out of the tape-in making it look natural.
  • Medium, Thick or Coarse hair: Hand-Tied, Beaded or Fusions will be the best blending your hair into the hair extensions.

Hair Extensions come in:

Texture: Straight, Body Wave or Curly hair. This is perfect for matching your natural hair texture to the extensions as well how you style your hair the most.

Length: 10″ to 24″

The diagram below will help give an idea of the textures and lengths but remember that your height will change the length of the hair. As for me I am 5’2″ and 24″ goes to my hips.

Maintenance.

Most touch ups for hair extensions will vary depending on how fast your hair grows, how well you take care of your hair and type of hair extensions to choose. But on average it is 5-8 weeks for Micro Bonding, Tape Ins and Hand Tied, 2-4 months for Tipped and Fusions.
